Smithbucklin is seeking an experienced Talent Acquisition Executive (Director level) who is enthusiastic about leading the talent acquisition strategy and function company-wide, being an ambassador and building our brand in the marketplace, maintaining a positive candidate experience and coaching and mentoring a team of three talent acquisition specialists. We are looking for an individual who will apply creative, innovative and resourceful recruiting approaches to help us attract and hire quality candidates for our high energy, billable, professional services environment.  This position will support multiple locations, experience levels and client facing units and corporate professionals (association executive directors, membership support, marketing, event planning, education and credentialing, information technology, finance and accounting).  This position is a highly self-managed role where high-pressure situations are characterized by changing expectations and multiple priorities. The position reports to the Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer.

  • Lead talent acquisition strategy and function across all units and locations.
  • Identify and implement leading practices and drive change by enabling others to apply creativity and innovative thinking.
  • Lead the talent branding strategy from design through implementation in partnership with the corporate marketing team.
  • Serve as a member of the advisory council, inCouncil, which leads the company’s diversity, equity and inclusion goals and strategies.
  • Develop consultative relationships with hiring managers and unit heads which result in being considered a true business partner. Work collaboratively with the HR business partners to help integrate the needs of a multidimensional workforce into how we operate.
  • Oversee executive searches involving client organization board level interactions.
  • Develop broad network of industry partners and vendors to support niche and/or remote searches and ad hoc requirements.
  • Identify new strategies and opportunities to reach a diverse pool of potential candidates.
  • Strengthen the selection process by developing best practice assessment measures, formal candidate write-ups, and timely communication and collaboration with hiring managers.
  • Manage and integrate our psychometric assessment tool and educate recruiters and hiring managers on its use.
  • Identify key talent acquisition metrics and deliver accurate reporting to the business.
  • Create and manage the recruitment financials (i.e., monthly forecast and annual budget) and contract negotiation with search agencies, job boards, LinkedIn and other search vehicles.
  • Serve as a member of the HR executive team (includes three HR business partner executives and one talent development executive) providing impact and support for overall people strategies.
  • Mentor, coach and develop talent acquisition team.

  • Ability to maintain composure and objectively coach employees at all levels.
  • Success with both passive and active sourcing and recruitment strategies for high volume searches at the entry-level, as well as mid-level, executive, and niche/specialized searches, including fulfilling Smithbucklin’s commitments to building a multidimensional workforce and inclusive culture.
  • Ability to learn the business at an accelerated pace and educate candidates on the company.
  • Strong investigative and research skills (knows where to find relevant talent, how to generate names, network, and obtain referrals).
  • Learns and uses new recruiting related technology.
  • Successful history learning and navigating remote markets and clients, and developing relationships with remote hiring managers and candidates.


  • Ten or more years of progressive talent acquisition experience. Minimum of three years managing a team.
  • Experience with Jobvite ATS a plus.


  • The successful candidate be able to work out of our Chicago, Il or Washington, D.C. downtown offices, with a partial remote working schedule (we follow a hybrid work schedule).
  • As needed travel to other office locations <10% annually.
